Newsletter 1st December 2019

New to the Parish Church?

New to Godmanchester, or a visitor to the town, and you would like to know more about the St Mary’s community? Please collect a ‘Welcome’ flyer from the table by the entrance door. Do make yourself known to the Vicar, a Churchwarden or sidesperson and please join us in the church hall for refreshments after the 9.30am service.

Holy Baptism

Today we welcome Isaac and Seth Whapshott into the family of Christ with Holy Baptism at 11.30am. Please keep them, their family and supporters in your prayers and do come along to support if you can.

Advent Carol Service & Mince Pies

Our annual Advent Carol Service will be held in church today, Sunday 1st December, at 6:30pm. This service is a wonderful start to the season of Advent beginning in candlelight with an augmented choir leading the congregation. After the service wine & mince pies provided by the choir will be served in the Parish Room to all from the congregation. Do come along to this wonderful service.

Christmas Bazaar

The total income for church funds from the Christmas Bazaar was £1,530, an increase of £250 over 2018 so many thanks to everyone that contributed to the success of the event.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!

Many thanks to everyone who helped during the bazaar. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and all your efforts were greatly appreciated. Thank you to the members of the wives group who provided delicious cakes and cups of tea all afternoon.

The Bazaar Committee.

Thank you

The Wives Group would like to send a huge "thank you" to everyone who contributed to the teas for the Bazaar last Saturday. We were so grateful and all our customers remarked on the wonderful display of goodies on offer. Again, many thanks.

Olwyn Hurd (chairman).

Parish Giving

Several members of our congregation have now joined the new ‘Parish Giving’ scheme which allows contributions to be collected by direct debit through a central C of E organisation and they are then credited as a block payment to our church together with the relevant Gift Aid. The scheme givers donors the option of increasing their payment annually with inflation should they so wish. I now have a further supply of the forms and guidance leaflet so if anyone wishes to change to the new scheme please contact me.

A common comment on the scheme is that people are embarrassed to pass on a collection plate without putting something in it. The Parish Giving organisation has therefore produced a token that can be collected from the back of the church before a service and placed in the collection plate to signify that the donor is using the Parish Giving scheme.

The other option is to use an empty regular donation envelope as I have plenty of spares and then write on the back ‘DD’ or ‘SO’ as appropriate.

Please contact me if you wish to join the Parish Giving scheme or have any questions about giving.

Churches Together Hustings

As at previous general elections, Churches Together in Huntingdon, Godmanchester & St Neots have organised hustings at which the local parliamentary candidates will both present their views and be available for questioning. All are welcome to this, not just church members – it is organised by local churches on behalf of the whole community. The next takes place on Wednesday 4th December (7-9pm) in St Neots United Reformed Church and the final one on Sunday 8th December (3-4.30pm) in Brampton Parish Church. All candidates for the Huntingdon constituency election have been invited. Do spread the word.

Thank You

We are so grateful for all the expressions of good wishes on our marriage, and for the excessively generous cheque. Thank you all very much indeed. Our love, Anja & David

Leaves Task Force

Please join us on Saturday 7th December, for an hour or so, to help clear leaves from the area around the church. We’ll be there from 9.30am onwards. Bring rakes if you have them. Tea and coffee provided! Robert Francis 01480 393392

Nicholas Ferrar Day

Little Gidding is one of the ‘holy places’ of Huntingdonshire, particularly because of the Ferrar household who lived there as a religious community from 1625 to 1646. The annual commemoration of Nicholas Ferrar, leader of the community, will take place on Saturday 7th December. After the Eucharist at 10.30am in Little Gidding church the clergy of the parish (Mandy Flaherty and Fiona Brampton) will speak about their vision for the next chapter in the history of Little Gidding. For further information about Little Gidding, contact Robert Caroe or Jonathan Young.

Connie Andrews: Thanksgiving

A Service of Thanksgiving for Connie Andrews will take place at Godmanchester Baptist Church, East Chadley Lane, at 2pm on Monday 9th December. This will be preceded by a cremation service at Cambridge Crematorium, West Chapel, earlier the same day at 11am. All are welcome to both services.

Events Stewards Needed

We are looking for people who will be willing to help set up, steward, and tidy up for events such as concerts booked by outside organisations such as choral societies or orchestras. At the moment much of the work falls on the same few people each time. This would only be a few times a year – the bigger the pool of people we can call on, the fewer times you will be required! Please let me know if you or anyone you know are willing to help. David (436400 dwbusk@hotmail.com)
