Welcome to St Mary’s

New to the Parish Church?

New to Godmanchester, or a visitor to the town, and you would like to know more about the St Mary’s community? Please collect a ‘Welcome’ flyer from the table by the entrance door. Do make yourself known to the Vicar, one of the Churchwardens or sidespersons and please join us in the church hall for refreshments after the 9.30am service today.

Fen River Way walk with Bishop Dagmar

Bishop Dagmar is walking the Fen River Way from 12 to 14 September, and invites anyone from the Diocese to join her for any part of the walk, and in the churches she will visit. Please see flyer on table by main church door for more details. Please do share this with your friends. She does not know the area and terrain so timings are very approximate, please allow for this. If walking, please be prepared for a reasonably brisk pace (around 20 miles will need to be covered in the first two days) and as you require, bring your own snacks/refreshments, mindful of the need for water, especially if it’s hot. Bishop Dagmar says: “I very much look forward to meeting you along the Fen Rivers Way, in Godmanchester and over the next few months as I settle into the Diocese.”

Godmanchester in Bloom Neighbourhood Achievement Award.

Congratulations to all those who help with the maintenance and upkeep of the Churchyard. This award is a token of all the hard work that both the Church and the Town Council do to keep it looking so good all year round. The Town is grateful. The Award is being made next Tuesday 10 September at 5pm in the Church yard. Everyone welcome.

Ride and Stride Day 2019

The annual Ride and Stride day for the Diocese of Ely is on 14 September. Over the years we have managed to put together a team to welcome riders and striders to St Mary’s. I hope that we can repeat this in 2019. However, this year it will be significantly more complicated because it will be on the same day as the Town Show. In the morning the Church will be full of people preparing for the show and in the afternoon, it will be the show itself. I fear that the people laying out exhibits will not want to receive visitors and that those who historically have helped to look after the riders and striders are the same people who will be running the show! So, I suspect that I am looking for someone new to manage the rota and for a team that will welcome our visitors from all over the County with a fruit squash and a biscuit (? In the Church Hall). We need to cover from about 9.45am to 2.30pm. Please report to me as quickly as possible so I can get everyone talking to each other about how best to cover the day. For the last 3 years a single rider from congregation has ridden on his own. Those riders have raised very significant sums of money. I am sure they would be delighted to have company from others who had also got sponsors. Half of all sponsorship money goes to our parish church. If anyone would like to ride and can get some sponsorship at short notice, call me on 433467 in the evening or e-mail me on a.leighsmith@btinternet.com. I am confident that a committed 09.30 start and without the usual stops would enable us to be round by 2pm, so time for a shower and change and still be at the show (albeit without a wish to sit down for tea). All the paperwork you need can be downloaded from the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust Web Site and reading the notes and clicking on the documents. If you don’t have internet access, tell me and I will print off a bundle for you. Let’s see if we can get out a few more riders or even a team to compete with our previous years’ efforts! Friends of St Mary’s AGM

All Members of the Friends of St Mary’s Church are cordially invited to the Friends of St Mary’s Church AGM TODAY at 2.30pm at the church hall.

Afterwards at about 3pm there will be a cream tea with delicious home-made cakes, scones with strawberry jam and cream and excellent sandwiches which will follow the business of the day. All are invited. Kate Hadley

Godmanchester Town Show

Saturday 14 September is the date for this year’s Godmanchester Town Show. Since the Town Show has become an annual feature of the town’s calendar the wonderful ladies of St Mary’s congregation have provided cakes for the refreshment stall at the show. Thank you so much for doing this and I would ask you if would be good enough to repeat your baking effort for this year’s show please? Cakes can be brought to the church on the morning of the show or delivered to Deb Watts (07804095921) 39, West Street beforehand. Bobby Jones (Town Show Committee)

Quiet Day at Little Gidding

There will be a parish Quiet Day at Ferrar House, Little Gidding, on Wednesday October 9, between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm. This will be a time of reflection, prayer, discussion, and as the name implies, quiet, and is of course open to all. The cost will be £21 per person, to include lunch and other refreshments. Please indicate on the sheet by the south door if you would like to come – a name is sufficient at the moment.

Welcome service for the Bishop of Huntingdon

The new Bishop of Huntingdon, Rt Revd Dagmar Winter, will be welcomed to the Diocese of Ely in a special service of Festal Evensong here at St Mary’s on Sunday September 15th at 3.00 pm. This is a service for the whole of the diocese, not just for Godmanchester, and seating will be limited. Other parishes are being asked to send just one representative each, but since this is in our own church all should feel welcome to attend, on the understanding that there may be standing room only. There will be no 6.30 pm Evensong that day. David Busk
