Christian Aid

Christian Aid week begins on Sunday 12 May. Aswe did last year we shall be holding a ‘Songs of Praise Service’ for Christian Aid at 6.30pm next Sunday instead of the usual Sung Evensong. It was a most enjoyable service last year so we are hoping that many of you will come.

I also would like to extend very many thanks to those people who have offered to do street collections this year. Thank you.

Revd George Thomas

You will be saddened to hear that the Revd George Thomas has died. During the interregnum following Neil Follet’s departure George was a familiar face, and a great friend, to us all for many weeks. A former headteacher at St Peter’s School, he lived in Bluntisham and will be greatly missed by his friends and family. His funeral will take place at Holywell Church on Thursday 9th May at 2.00pm with a reception afterwards at The White Hart in Godmanchester.

Bacon Butties

There will be tasty bacon butties after church TODAY. These will be sold to raise money for HAMA so even if you have had a full English breakfast please come and enjoy some coffee and give a donation to a very worthy cause. We look forward to seeing you.

Mary Ann Weems

The celebration anniversary of the death of Mary Ann Weems will take place in the churchyard 0n WEDESDAY 8TH MAY not on Tuesday as written in the magazine. It seems that the date on the tombstone is incorrect.

THE MAGIC OF MOZART

The Hunts Phil choir with a small chamber orchestra and organ will be singing a selection of Mozart’s well-known choral music including ‘Ave verum Corpus’ and his ‘Coronation Mass’ in our church on Saturday 18 May at 7.30pm. There will be a coffee morning for Christian Aid next Saturday May 4th from 10.00 am –12.00 at the Vicarage. Please support it if you can. There will be a raffle and prizeswould be welcome.

The speaker, Martin Brooke, will talk on “The Black Dog and the Good Shepherd”, discussing from a Christian perspective the strugglethat many with mental health problems face. Martin is a PR consultant and is on the leadership of Hope Church in Teversham. Please let Andrew Fawcett know by 30th April if you are coming.Cost of the breakfast cost will be £8.

Many may be aware that David Soldan, who has been organising the Breakfasts since they were started a number of years ago, and his wife Mary are leaving the area for Devon. We give thanks for all they have done in the area and wish them every happiness in their move. Future breakfasts will be guided by Charlie Newcombe and Colin Hardy of Christ Church, Huntingdon. An interesting program of speakers over the next few months is proposed. Details will appear in our Newsletter and Church Magazine.

The formal “Notice of Annual Parochial Church Meeting” is on the main notice board in the South Porch. The election of churchwardens and APCM will be held in the Church Hall this Sunday 28 April 2019 starting at 11:15. The meeting includes the election of 2 Churchwardens, 2members of the PCC and 1 Representative to Deanery Synod, who automatically become members of the PCC.

Anybody registered on the local government electoral roll is entitled to vote for the election of the churchwardens, but only persons whose names are entered upon the Church Electoral Roll are entitled to vote at the APCM.

Flower Guild invite donations for the purchase of Lilies for our Easter flower arrangements. As in previous years personal dedications may be made to loved ones in the remembrance book by the memorial altar. Please place your donation in an Easter Lily envelope and post in the box by the south door or hand to Barbara Thirlwall.

Cyclone Idai Appeal

We are holding a retiring collection at the end of theservice to contribute to the Disaster Emergency Committee’s (DEC) appeal to help the people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe affected by the worst cyclone ever to hit southern Africa. According to DEC, 750 people are known to have been killed, the total islikely to be much higher, and over 2.5 million made homeless.

As requested by the Archbishops, our bells were rung for 7 minutes at 7pm on Thursday as a mark of solidarity following the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. We thought it appropriate that we should ring our bells in continental style, i.e. not full-circle and therefore no change-ringing.

Confirmation celebration

Wedding of Felicity White and Gordon Wai

Some of you may remember Felicity, who was a very active member of the church throughout her teenage years; she sang in the choir; played the organ, and she was a member of the youth group and the church orchestra. She left Godmanchester to go to Merton College, Oxford, and it was there that she met her husband-to-be, Gordon. After studying history and then law she moved to Guernsey to continue her career in law. She moved back to the UK in December and she and Gordon are setting up home in Orpington. You are all welcome to join the family for the wedding service on Saturday 27th April at 2.00 pm.

Passover Supper – Wednesday 17 April 2019 at 7.30 pm

For generations the uplifting experience of the Passover meal has been celebrated and is seen in the context of God’s saving love, stretching from creation over the whole course of human history. Celebrating this meal together is a wonderful opportunity to discover a fresh way of telling the story of God’s love, through tastes, textures, prayers readings and songs. This traditional order, or Seder, ofthis special evening will take place in the St Mary the Virgin Church Hall in Chadley Lane, Godmanchester PE29 2AL. There is a charge of £4.00 for adults but nocharge for children, as children are the key to this celebration. Tickets will be available after the 09.30 am service on 31 March, 7 and 14 April. Tickets can also be reserved on 01480 493 901. If leaving a message, please advise how many adults and children wish to attend and leave your name and telephone details so that we can contact you.

Maundy Thursday Eucharist of the Last Supper on 18 April at 7.30pm

As in previous years, we will be performing the ritual of foot washing, for which we require 12 volunteers from the congregation. This is of course a re-enactment of what Jesus did for his disciples at the last Supper. If you would like to have your feet washed as a way of entering more deeply into the meaning of Maundy Thursday, please put your name on the list by the south door of the church.

We will be keeping the usual watch at the St Anne’s Altar from the end of the Eucharist of the Last Supper until midnight. If you would like to participate by keeping watch during one or more of the half-hour slots, please put your name on the list at the back of the church.

Lent Groups

This year as usual there will be groups meeting during Lent to explore together how we can grow in faith and live in it more fully. We will be using Your Call, a set of resources for Lent groups created by the Revd Canon Dr Jessica Martin at Ely Cathedral. All are welcome to these groups, those new to faith or even not sure about faith at all, as well as those who have practised the Christian faith for many years.

One group will meet in the Vicarage at 10.45 am on Wednesdays during Lent: April 10. (Please note: there will be no meeting on April 3 – this is a change from the details published in the magazine.) There will be another group meeting at 7.30 pm on Thursday evenings at Jean and Dai Morgan’s house, 2A Earning St.

Ivy Clearing in Churchyard

A big thank you to the 2nd Godmanchester Brownies for coming on Wednesday afternoon to clear ivy from lots of gravestones in the churchyard. About 15 Brownies with a number of parents worked hard to remove ivy and take it to the compost bin. It has made a big difference, and they said that they would like to come again later in the year to do some more. Thanks also to Ruth Ekblom for arranging it.

Dear Mr & Mrs Hurd

I am writing on behalf of the Centre and the manager to thank you for the many items of clothing, the super coat, hats and puzzles that you kindly brought to the Centre the other day.

We cannot stress enough how grateful we are for such items and how much they are appreciated by the seafarers.

This time last year after many years of volunteering for one of the national seafarer’s societies, I took on the role of Volunteer Welfare Ship Visitor for the Centre.

I also act as Ambassador for the Centre going out and giving short talks to promote the Centre.

We are always grateful for the support we receive from people such as yourselves, for without it as an independent standalone charity we would not be able to do the work we do.

Passover Supper – Wednesday 17 April 2019 at 7.30 pm For generations the uplifting experience of the Passover meal has been celebrated and is seen in the context of God’s saving love, stretching from creation over the whole course of human history. Celebrating this meal together is a wonderful opportunity todiscover a fresh way of telling the story of God’s love, through tastes, textures, prayers readings and songs. This traditional order, or Seder, of this special evening will take place in the St Mary the Virgin Church Hall in Chadley Lane, Godmanchester PE29 2AL. There is a charge of £4.00 for adults but no charge for children, as children are the key to this celebration. Tickets will be available after the 09.30 am service on 31 March, 7and 14 April. Churchyard Grass Cutting The churchyard is divided into 14 plots, so ideally we need 14 volunteers. Right now we have nine or ten, including three ladies. Each person has a plot which they cut as required, usually every one to two weeks depending on the weather. There are no fixed times – come when it suits you. Plots take about an hour to cut. Mowers and fuel are of course provided. Please contact me if you would like to know more, or if you think you can join us. We would certainly welcome some more volunteers. Robert Francis, 393 392

A reminder that a completely new Church Electoral Rollhas to be drawn up this year and forms are on the table by the South Door. If you wish to be included on the Roll, which means you are qualified to attend the APCM in April and vote in elections to the PCC and Deanery Synod, please complete a form (one per person) and drop it in the box alongside. Even if you have been on the Roll for many years, you will still need to complete a new form this year and they should be returned by the end of March. This year as usual there will be groups meeting during Lent to explore together how we can grow in faith and live in it more fully. We will be using Your Call, a set of resources for Lent groups created by the Revd Canon Dr Jessica Martin at Ely Cathedral. All are welcome to these groups, those new to faith or even not sure about faith at all, as well as those who have practised the Christian faith for many years.

Frugal lunch

There will be a frugal lunch in the church hall today at 12.00 noon. This is to support the Bishop’s Lent Appeal, which in conjunction with Christian Aid aims to give business opportunities through sustainable energy projects for women in rural Malawi, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Honduras. No charge, but donations are invited, and there will be a raffle for which prizes will be gratefully received.

Coffee

There will be a coffee morning on Friday 5 April at the home of Jean Morgan to raise money for two new wall boards advertising Mothering Sunday and the Taizé services. The event will run from 10.30 am until midday. We aim to have a bring and buy and a raffle. Please come and support this event and please also bring your friends to enjoy some cakes and scones.

Wives’ Group

Our meeting on 12 March at 7.30pm in the church hall, will be a presentation by magmas. As we are sure this can be of interest to all, we invite all ladies – and gentlemen to come. Holy Baptism

Today we welcome Jamie, Luca and Reece Elderton into the family of Christ. Please support them, their parents and friends with your prayers and all present with them in church this morning.

Ash Wednesday

Lent begins this Wednesday, March 6, and as usual we will mark it by holding a Sung Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes (a mark made on the forehead with ash as a symbol of penitence) at 7.30pm in church. Please come!

Mens’ Breakfast

There will be a Churches Together Mens Breakfast on Saturday 9 March (next Saturday) beginning at 8:00 am. On this occasion the breakfast will be in our church hall on Chadley Lane – not the Barley Mow – and to mark Lent the meal will be relatively simple (but ample) – no cooked food. The speaker will be Natasha Clarke who is Secondary Schools Coordinator for Ely Diocese. She is involved in the work with schools and clubs outside schools. There will be no charge for the breakfast but an opportunity for donations to the work of ‘Thrive’.

These breakfasts are enjoyable occasions and all men will be very welcome. Andrew Fawcett would much appreciate help in setting up in the church hall from 7:30 am on the Saturday.
