“Catherine Parr: Henry VIII’s Last Wife: The Queen Who Survived – and Thrived”
Catherine achieved what five predecessors couldn’t: she outlived the King. This clever, comely, twice-widowed 31-year-old transformed the Tudor court through emotional intelligence rather than beauty or fertility. She won the hearts of Henry’s neglected children—reconciling Mary and Elizabeth with their dangerous father, while providing maternal love to 5-year-old Edward. Her reward? Unprecedented power as Regent of England. David Starkey’s talk offers radically new and surprising insights into the woman who navigated Tudor politics with grace, intelligence, and ultimately, survival.

Community Board Game Cafe – starting from Sunday 19th October
What’s your best Scrabble word? Are you a chess champion on the quiet? Are your Cluedo detective skills up to scratch? We would like to invite anyone and everyone (of all ages) in the congregation who enjoys board games to come along on a Sunday afternoon. On the third Sunday of every month between 3-4.30pm in the church hall, we encourage you to bring along your favourite board game, although not essential as we will have a library of games to choose from, and spend some time playing and enjoying refreshments with others. Our first Board Game Cafe will be on Sunday October 19th. For more details, please contact Paula Williams at paulawilliams30
Are you who we are looking for?
Do you enjoy spending time with enthusiastic and friendly people? Do you like helping others and also enjoy a good biscuit?! Then you might be just the person we are looking for! Children’s Church are on the lookout for some new leaders to add to our dedicated team who help nurture the younger members of the St Mary’s congregation. We have children from 0- to considerably older, as Children’s Church is very much a family affair – the parents, grandparents, and other family members are just as important as the children. As a leader we are wanting some help to lead a session once every couple of months. If you think you might be able to help us then please email paulawilliams30@tiscali.co.uk or see her after today’s service for more details
Charities Committee
We would like to expand the Charities Committee as we have all been on the committee for over ten years, and think it’s time to bring in some new people with different perspectives and skills/contacts. In addition to our regular Bacon Butties and Croissants after the 9.30 service on Sundays, we organise three major events each year to raise funds for selected charities. If you would like to consider joining us, please talk to me or one of the other committee members – Jane Nichols, Deb Watts, Kate Barkshire, Dilys Roe or David Busk. Robert Francis
A message from the Choir
The choir is looking for new voices to join us. Do you know how to sing or know anyone who does and have a couple of hours available per week? Please consider joining us and help us continuing to beautify the services in our Church. Remember that “singing is double praying”; (Old Portuguese proverb).
Talking about Christmas
Christmas is approaching and we need to start thinking what we can do to help at this very busy time around our church. I hope to have the Operation Christmas boxes out soon. For those who want to do one, we will have around a month to sort it out. I will try to find the date for the boxes to be ready.
Our Christmas Bazaar will be on 29th November from 1.30 to 4.30 in the afternoon. We need volunteers at 10.00 in the morning to help set up and at 4.30 in the afternoon to help clear up. We need the usual donations: cakes, bottled or canned drinks with and without alcohol for the bottle stall, gifts, books, CDs, DVDs and puzzles. The refreshments team need help serving and washing up in the church hall and specially home baked cakes; and your presence on the day would be welcomed. This year we have a number of different stalls and products from previous years. If anyone has any Christmas events they want to publicise, please let us know and we can add to this note. Thank you, Lucilia
