Newsletter 19th February 2023

Bacon Butties

Bacon Butties are being served this morning following the 9.45 am service. Suggested donation £3.00 for Coffee and a Bacon Buttie. All proceeds are being donated to Thrive Youth Work.

Ash Wednesday

Lent begins this coming Wednesday, 22nd February. As usual we will have a Sung Eucharist that evening at 7.30 pm, including the Imposition of Ashes (the sign of the cross on the forehead in ash made from last year’s palm crosses, as a symbol of penitence) for those who want to receive it. Please come if you can.

Lent Prayer & Study Group

There will be a prayer and study group meeting in the Vicarage at 10am on six Fridays in Lent, the first on Friday 24th February and the last on Friday 31st March. We will be using reflections from a booklet called ‘Dust and Glory’, which looks at faith, failure and forgiveness. The booklet is provided. All are welcome – do please consider coming. There is no need to book in advance, and no need to commit to all six sessions. Refreshments provided.

Evensong 26th February

Our monthly Evensong, with choir, hymns, an anthem, sung canticles and responses, and a sermon, takes place next on Sunday 26th February at 6.30 pm. It would be good to see the chancel full of people!

Earthquake Appeal

In response to the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, we are holding another retiring collection today, Sunday 19th February. If you want to make donations during the week, they can be delivered to the Vicarage or to me at 20 Post Street. Proceeds will be sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s appeal. DEC is a grouping of UK charities including Christian Aid, Save the Children, Oxfam and the British Red Cross. If you are a tax payer, and wish to Gift Aid your donation, you should donate directly to DEC as we can’t do that on your behalf. Please visit DEC.ORG.UK or phone 0370 60 60 610 for details on how to donate with Gift Aid. Please give generously. Robert Francis

Sale of Pews

We are selling the small pews from the North Aisle of the church. They are made of oak and 5ft 6in long, with cushions. We sold two at auction last week for £75 each, so a donation in that range to the Transformation Fund would be welcome. Delivery can be arranged. If you are interested please contact me on 01480 393 392. Robert Francis

Newsletter Plea

This Newsletter that you are reading is available every Sunday and, since its reinstatement in August 2021 (post-COVID), has been single-handedly published by yours truly (JH). Previously we have had a team of about 4 or 5 volunteers who took it in turn to do a 2-month stint in the hot seat; and it would be good if we could have some willing hands to do the same again.

The Newsletter is currently published in ‘Microsoft Word’ and anyone who has the basic skills on a PC or laptop would easily be able to join the Newsletter team. All of the information appearing on the front and diary pages is provided on spreadsheets and lists, so you would have everything needed to hand. The items on the internal pages are sent to the current publisher for presentation in the house style.

If you feel able to join then please contact me and I can run you through the routine and help you get started when you are ready. Many thanks. Jim Heeley on 412264 and jskc
